Describe the problem

The Direct Messages button currently automatically opens the last DM you were looking at, which makes it very easy to accidentally leak messages while screen sharing (trying to show people how cool this client is :3)

Describe the solution you'd like

I would like the an option to have the Direct Messages button open a page that doesn't display any private messages, something like the lobby page in a space would be ideal, but any form of landing page would suffice

Alternatives considered

• clicking into a DM with a user you haven't sent anything of note to every time you are about to leave DMs (currently doing this with a testing user, very annoying)
• not attempting to convert people to matrix showing people this very cool client

Don't we currently handle this the same way as discord? From a UX perspective, I think it makes sense to re-open your last open DM/room chat when open the DMs/space sections.

I think the current behaviour makes sense too since it mimics the Discord behaviour. While still on that topic, maybe it'd be nice to have a "friends" list like they do.

Since there's no concept of a friends list in Matrix, it could be a list of DM rooms that are marked as favourite, a pseudo-space that only appears if you've marked a DM or user as favourite.
What do you think @Nervyalloy5?

A little mockup of what I had in mind, in case it wasn't clear. Purely done with image editing, I'm not a programmer unfortunately.
Might be useful for people who have tons of DM rooms.

@nixRidge I was typing out a comment about adding something similar to the discord friends tab when you sent that, so yes i think that would be a nice solution which wouldn't need to change the current behavior

Or we could just pin favourites to the top of the /direct/ list? We don't currently have a concept of "favourites" in Sable, though I doubt adding it would be too hard.

Shoving favourites to the top of the direct list sounds more prudent to me, maybe with a separator.
