Phase 8 Objectives

Primary Goals

  1. Verify deterministic builds - Same input produces same ISO
  2. Test build reproducibility - Rebuild and compare checksums
  3. Implement GPG signing - Sign commits and commits
  4. Create signed artifacts - Checksums, SBOM with signatures
  5. Verify attestation - SLSA/in-toto format
  6. Test CI/CD execution - GitHub Actions and GitLab CI

Success Criteria

  • ✅ Build produces identical output on rebuild
  • ✅ SHA256 checksums match across builds
  • ✅ GPG signatures validate correctly
  • ✅ SBOM generates and validates
  • ✅ GitHub Actions workflow runs successfully
  • ✅ GitLab CI pipeline runs successfully
  • ✅ All artifacts generated and uploaded
  • ✅ Security scanning completes without critical findings
  • ✅ Build number auto-increments correctly
  • ✅ Metadata embeds correctly in ISO

Testing Plan

Phase 8a: Local Build Testing (Manual)

Objective: Verify build system works locally before CI/CD

# 1. Generate version
./generate-build-version.sh

# 2. Build ISO (test mode - skip rootfs creation)
SKIP_ROOTFS=1 ./build-mate.sh --test

# 3. Verify metadata
cat airootfs/etc/acreetion-build-version

# 4. Test versioning increments
./generate-build-version.sh
./generate-build-version.sh

# 5. Rebuild and compare checksums
SHA1=$(cat .buildversion | grep BUILD_HASH)
./build-mate.sh
SHA2=$(cat .buildversion | grep BUILD_HASH)

# If SHA1 == SHA2, build is deterministic ✓

Phase 8b: GitHub Actions Testing

Objective: Verify GitHub Actions workflow executes

1. Create test tag: git tag -a v1.0.0-mate-test -m "Test build"
2. Push tag: git push origin v1.0.0-mate-test
3. Watch workflow: Actions → build.yml → latest run
4. Verify:
   - Build completes without errors
   - Artifacts uploaded
   - Security scan passes
   - Version increments to 1
   - Release created with checksums

Phase 8c: GitLab CI Testing

Objective: Verify GitLab CI pipeline executes (if GitLab configured)

1. Create test tag: git tag -a v1.0.0-mate-gl-test -m "GitLab test"
2. Push to GitLab: git push gitlab v1.0.0-mate-gl-test
3. Watch pipeline: CI/CD → Pipelines → latest
4. Verify:
   - Build stage completes
   - Security stage passes
   - Release stage creates artifacts
   - All jobs successful

Phase 8d: Reproducibility Verification

Objective: Prove builds are deterministic

Procedure:
1. Build 1: Generate version → Run build → Record SHA256
2. Build 2: Generate version → Run build → Record SHA256
3. Compare: If SHA256 matches, build is reproducible ✓

Expected Result:
  Build 1 SHA256: abc123def456...
  Build 2 SHA256: abc123def456... (matches) ✓
  Reproducible: YES ✓

Known Limitations & Considerations

Build System Limitations

  1. Build Time: Full ISO build takes 45-90 minutes on typical hardware
  2. Disk Space: Build requires ~20-30GB free space
  3. Network: Package downloads depend on network speed
  4. Reproducibility: Depends on identical timestamps and build order

Testing Limitations

  1. CI/CD Testing: Requires GitHub/GitLab account with proper permissions
  2. GPG Signing: Requires GPG key setup in CI/CD environment
  3. Artifact Upload: Depends on storage quota (GitHub/GitLab limits)
  4. ISO Verification: Manual boot testing not automated

Security Considerations

  1. GPG Keys: Must be securely stored and rotated
  2. Access Control: Limit who can trigger builds
  3. Secret Management: API tokens and credentials need protection
  4. Artifact Retention: Old artifacts will accumulate (30-day policy recommended)

Dependencies & Requirements

For Phase 8 Testing

Required:
✓ Git repository (already set up)
✓ GitHub Actions enabled (already configured)
✓ GitLab CI available (if GitLab mirroring used)
✓ Build system files (already created)
