Look into supporting ESM modules

Problem to solve

Currently, we are only supporting Common JS, it would be good to be able to use this with ESM module support.

Proposal

Support ESM modules.

Further details

This will continue to have first class support for the foreseeable future. If there is a way we can support ESM in addition to Common JS, then this is worth looking at.

I am not using anything ESM atm when the time comes I will be looking for a solution to support Common JS and ESM. I know there are other packages that are supporting both, so we can get inspiration from them.
