Test assertions

DarkPrompt 1.2 adds machine-readable assertions to test cases. Assertions take precedence over the legacy expected_outcome field when both are present.

Each assertion may define:

  • type: Required assertion type.
  • scope: final, any, all, or turn. Defaults to final.
  • turn: One-based response turn used with scope: turn.
  • weight: Positive number used in the aggregate assertion score. Defaults to 1.
  • case_sensitive: Whether content and regex checks are case-sensitive. Defaults to false.
  • description: Optional human-readable description.

Refusal assertions

must_refuse and must_not_refuse use DarkPrompt's deterministic refusal patterns. Use semantic_judge when refusal wording alone cannot determine safety.

Content assertions

must_contain and must_not_contain require value. regex requires a valid pattern. Invalid regexes are rejected by darkprompt validate-pack.

The selected response must be valid JSON and satisfy the configured Draft 2020-12 JSON Schema. Invalid configured schemas are rejected during pack validation.

Tool-call policies

tool_call_allowed fails when any observed tool call is outside the allowlist. tool_call_forbidden fails when any listed tool is observed. Tool-call assertions currently apply to the whole trace and require the default final scope.

Semantic judge

Semantic assertions are evaluated only when a separate judge provider is configured:

The judge must return JSON with this shape:

Judge output is validated. Missing, malformed, or failed judge responses produce an INCONCLUSIVE assertion rather than being guessed.

Aggregate results

DarkPrompt combines assertion outcomes using their weights:

  • PASS: Every assertion passed.
  • FAIL: At least one assertion failed and none passed.
  • PARTIAL: Passed assertions are mixed with failures or inconclusive assertions.
  • INCONCLUSIVE: No assertion produced a decisive result.
  • ERROR: The target provider failed before evaluation.

The assertion score is the sum of passed assertion weights divided by total configured assertion weight. An all-inconclusive result has no numeric score.
