<head>Samuel Wyllis</head>
<p><lb/>The son of George Wyllis, was born at Hartford Connec=
<lb/>=ticut, on the 15th of January 1739. He was educated at Yale col=
<lb/>=lege, where he graduated in 1758. In 1775 the legislature ap=
<lb/>=pointed him lieutenant colonel of general Spencer's regiment;
<lb/>and in January 1776 congress appointed him colonel of a regiment
<lb/>in the Connecticut line, in the continental establishment.
<lb/>In that capacity he served with reputation thro the war of the
<lb/>revolution. After the peace, he was employed by his native
<lb/>town in several offices, and as a representative in the general
<lb/>assembly. He was appointed brigadier, and afterwards major
<lb/>general, in the militia of the state. In May 1796, he succeeded
<lb/>his father as secretary of state, and continued in that office till
<lb/>the year 1809, when he was induced, by a paralytic affection,
<lb/>to resign it. He died at Hartford on the 9th of June 1823, in
<lb/>the eighty fifth year of his age. He with his father, and grand=
<lb/>=father, held the office of Secretary ninty eight successive years.
<lb/>A fact, probably, without a parallel in the history of republics.</p>
