Description
The SPRUCE (Spruce and Peatland Responses Under Changing Environments) experiment at Marcell Experimental Forest, MN provides a whole-ecosystem warming gradient (+0 to +9C) with eCO2. Microbial community responses have been characterized via amplicon sequencing and metatranscriptomics.
Key features:
- Warming promotes saprophytic fungi and chemoorganoheterotrophic bacteria
- eCO2 promotes ectomycorrhizal fungal associations
- Vascular plant fine root traits mediate climate change effects on microbial communities
- DOE-funded long-term experiment (ORNL)

This is a natural community (not synthetic) but well-characterized with defined warming treatments.
