Description

@cmungall

The SPRUCE (Spruce and Peatland Responses Under Changing Environments) experiment at Marcell Experimental Forest, MN provides a whole-ecosystem warming gradient (+0 to +9C) with eCO2. Microbial community responses have been characterized via amplicon sequencing and metatranscriptomics.

Key features:

  • Warming promotes saprophytic fungi and chemoorganoheterotrophic bacteria
  • eCO2 promotes ectomycorrhizal fungal associations
  • Vascular plant fine root traits mediate climate change effects on microbial communities
  • DOE-funded long-term experiment (ORNL)

Primary refs:

  • PMID:38515239 (doi:10.1111/nph.19690) - root-associated microbes under warming
  • PMID:34836550 (doi:10.1186/s40168-021-01156-0) - peat viromes

This is a natural community (not synthetic) but well-characterized with defined warming treatments.
