mxj net.maxhole errors and does not work

From a user:

I have a computer running 10.11 and Java 1.6 and this seems to run mxj net.maxhole fine.

I have another computer running 10.12 and Java 1.8 (Sierra won’t run the deprecated 1.6 runtime anymore) and mxj net.maxhole throws a couple errors and refuses to work:

net.maxhole: socket error. java.net.SocketException: Can't assign requested address
Have you already joined that group?

net.udp.send/receive is working.

Hey @pslack - the maxhole class is in the installer somewhere -we're just wondering if there might be something in it which has been deprecated, you might be able to tell at a glance

Hi I saw this resurface, Nick had a link above , the solution was to have the JVM select IPV4 stack preferably.
the solution was to start the JVM with -Djava.net.preferIPv4Stack=true
Also if there is no wifi or network connection on a MAC this can also lead to similar problems. For some reason the adapter does not actually show up if it is not plugged in / connected to wifi router.

I am on Mac, I need a howto for:

Is this something I have to type into the terminal?, will it be permanent? Do I have to write it into a config file, if yes which???
There must be an easy solution for non-programmers, or it needs to be fixed at the source...

It's bit hidden/tricky to set JVM options in Max:

• Go to Max.app, right click and select "Show Package Contents"
• Navigate to Max.app/Contents/Resources/C74/packages/max-mxj/java-classes and open max.java.config.txt
• Good Practice: Make a copy of the original before editing the file.
• from Line 43 on (Max 8.1.5) you will see the JVM options. You can set them there.

The caveat is, that your changes will be overwritten on every Max update or reinstall.
