Unclean exit "Overmind is already running"

I have added Overmind into my Dockerfile for my Rails application. And have changed the bin/dev from foreman to overmind.

However it seems that the Overmind process is not cleanly shutdown when the container stops as the .overmind.sock file is left.

The entrypoint specifies exec "${@}" which will be translated to exec bin/dev for my application and Overmind is running as pid 1.

Is this expected or am I missing something here?

Note that the Rails server.pid is cleaned up.

To add to this, I can replicate this by just running overmind in a VSCode terminal, then killing that terminal with the 🗑️ icon. Looks like the .sock file is left over and I have to manually remove it before overmind comes up, even though overmind ps fails with a connection error.

It would be nice if a new overmind instance would check for more than just the .sock file existing and actually confirm another instance was running instead

We've seen this as well as a few members of our team here. Would the maintainers be open to a PR that automatically cleans up the dangling sock files if they're dead? I can throw up a pull-request, but want to double check first.

Meanwhile, as a workaround, you could set the following in ~/.bash_profile or ~/.zprofile respectively:

export OVERMIND_SOCKET="127.0.0.1:4321"
export OVERMIND_NETWORK="tcp"

This way, Overmind does not create a .overmind.sock file but talks via TCP, so nothing to clean up. It has it's downsides as well, most notably only one Overmind should be running at a time.

But on the up side: I can easily define a custom action in iTerm2 (macOS) which sends the quit command using this socket and network. I'd still prefer to just Ctrl-C out of the control process to shut everything down, but since in real life some zombies always survive, this action and thus proper quit works much better for me.
