Error “Cannot find project” when installing plugin

The error appears just as I try to add the plugin to the freshly generated nx project.

~ npx create-nx-workspace@latest deploy-it-test
~ cd deploy-it-test
~ nx add @dev-thought/nx-deploy-it

>  NX   Cannot find project '@dev-thought/nx-deploy-it'

The latest nx version today is 14.2.4
