Grouping Challenge
DevRel value as a business influencer What is the value proposition of Developer Relations and how do you communicate it internally? This should target how DevRel drives value for other business segments, where DevRel fits, and how they work together towards common goals.
How do you measure the value of Developer Relations?
How do we coorelate the activities of Developer Relations teams towards business value for executive communication? Different orgs are going to have diff ways of mapping the value of DevRel to the business. Different paths to prove and execute value.
How do you track and capture feedback from the community to be able to inform product roadmap changes / priorities?
How do we educate non-DevRel professionals (e.g. Eng, Sales, Marketing) on the profession and value of Developer Relations?
How can we avoid the cycle of DevRel teams hiring and firing. Hiring when DevRel is trending and firing as soon as the trend ends or cuts need to be made?
Tracking and metrics How do you track customers / partners through the onboarding funnel / journey from initial engagement through to maturity?
Within certain segments (e.g. open source DevRel) there is no access to user engagement / funnel data. What core metrics and tracking systems should be in place to track and prove value from community engagement for different segments like these?
Common language / definitions / frameworks What are the common frameworks, tools, strategies and metrics for bootstrapping and maturing a Developer Relations function?
What is the common terminology for talking about the different functions of Developer Relations (for communication inside and outside the company)?
What are the different frameworks and engagement models for targeting different geographical regions (e.g. more partner focused in Japan)?
Should we have standardized names for different functions in DevRel?
Professional growth Are there common rubrics for different Developer Relations functions? These would be targeted towards supporting the professional growth of professionals in the industry.
How would someone migrate into Developer Relations from another industry (e.g. engineering, marketing, etc.)? What resources are needed to support and mature that transition?
What are the career paths from Developer Relations into new industries? What do the transitions look like and what resources are available?
How do I make Developer Relations sustainable for me vs the company? How do I separate personal and company time and build a personal profile and extends beyond the current company?
Why is the median work experience of a DevRel with one company less than 3-4 years? What can we do to improve it?
Developer personas and segments How can we connect people with similar professional backgrounds? For instance, can we create a directory of people - who’s in each space, their region, build connections for other people in the industry. This will give us a directory of people to reach out to for specific DevRel industries / questions.
How are we delineating between the different disciplines of Developer Relations (marketing, DevEx, advocacy, etc)
What are the different personas that should be addressed by all working groups in the foundation?
Other considerations Each group should be considering multiple different types of Developer Relations functions when proposing solutions. For instance, metrics for open source, marketing based, or internal DevRel teams might use the same frameworks but be applied very differently.
Does the foundation have any plans for running events in the future?
