<h2>Overview</h2>
<p>The CONTENT child growth study (referred to in this book as the
CONTENT study) was funded by the Sixth Framework Programme of the
European Union, Project CONTENT (INCO-DEV-3-032136) and was led by
Dr. William Checkley. The study was conducted between May 2007 and
February 2011 in Las Pampas de San Juan Miraflores and Nuevo Paraíso,
two peri-urban shanty towns with high population density located on the
southern edge of Lima city in Peru. The shanty towns had approximately
<span class="math inline">\(40,000\)</span> residents with <span
class="math inline">\(25\)</span>% of the population under the age of
<span class="math inline">\(5\)</span>. A simple census was conducted to
identify pregnant women and children less than <span
class="math inline">\(3\)</span> months of age. Eligible newborns and
pregnant women were randomly selected from the census and invited to
participate in the study. Only one newborn was recruited per household.
Written informed consent was required from parents or guardians before
enrollment. The study design was that of a longitudinal cohort study
with the primary objective to assess if infection with Helicobacter
pylori (H. pylori) increases the risk of diarrhea, which, in turn, could
adversely affect the growth in children less than <span
class="math inline">\(2\)</span> years of age.</p>

de-identified data publicly available and to the members of the
communities of Pampas de San Juan de Miraflores and Nuevo Paraíso who

<p>Anthropometric data were obtained longitudinally on <span
class="math inline">\(197\)</span> children weekly until the child was
<span class="math inline">\(3\)</span> months of age, every two weeks
between three and <span class="math inline">\(11\)</span> months of age,
and once monthly thereafter for the remainder of follow-up up to age
<span class="math inline">\(2\)</span>. Here we will focus on child
length and weight, both measured at the same visits. Even if visits were
designed to be equally spaced, they were obtained within different days
of each sampling period. For example, the observation on week four for a
child could be on day <span class="math inline">\(22\)</span> or <span
class="math inline">\(25\)</span>, depending on the availability of the
contact person, day of the week, or on the researchers who conducted the
visit. Moreover, not all planned visits were completed, which provided
the data a quasi-sparse structure, as observations are not temporally
synchronized across children.</p>
