Hi everyone!
I'm excited to share my new Home Assistant add-on: Barcode Buddy Python - a modern, lightweight alternative for Grocy barcode scanning.
What is it?
A Python-based barcode scanner with direct Grocy integration for Home Assistant. It provides a simple way to scan items in/out of your Grocy inventory using USB barcode scanners or manual entry.
Key Features
✅ USB Scanner Support (plug & play)
✅ Direct Grocy Integration
✅ Modern, clean Web UI
✅ Manual barcode entry
✅ Real-time updates
✅ Lightweight Python implementation
Why another Barcode Buddy?
While the original Barcode Buddy is great, I wanted something that:
- Runs natively in Home Assistant without Docker complexity
- Has a simpler, more maintainable codebase
- Focuses on core scanning functionality
- Works out-of-the-box with USB scanners
Installation
- Add the repository to Home Assistant:
Settings → Add-ons → Add-on Store (⋮) → Repositories
https://github.com/sitaro/barcodebuddy-python
- Install "Barcode Buddy Python"
- Configure your Grocy credentials
- Start the add-on

I'd love to hear your feedback and suggestions! If you encounter any issues, please open an issue on GitHub.
Happy scanning!
