Crashes and App not responding errors in version 1.5.0

1. Open the app
2. Open a conversation
3. Send a message

Expected behavior

No crashes or errors.

Actual behavior

App crashes or freezes when opening a conversation or when sending a message.

• I have not been able to reproduce this issue yet, but this is happening as per reports from other channels.
• This likely affects very long threads. I probably mishandled something in perf: optimize loading messages in threads #552. It was introduced in feat: add unread badge count for conversations #560.

First off: Thanks for all your efforts regarding the Fossify family of apps!

Do you need more debug info? I have this issue in long threads it seems, but after it happens the first time, even in new ones started with a number I have never written a message to.
Hanging occurs when pushing the send button. It then either takes very long to actually send the message or even prompts that the app is not responding. Pressing "Wait" lots of times finally makes the process finish.
During the long wait time, one thread/process of com.android.phone hogs one core with 100% usage.
When the message is finally sent out, about a minute of high CPU activity, still with com.android.phone and org.fossify.messages follows as well.

Pasting passages of logcat that might be related:

I am unable to reproduce it anymore now after the above try which took ages to complete. Works now as it should. This is weird.

It would be great if you could answer the following questions:

• How many conversations do you have?
• Do you know how many messages are in that affected long thread? Also, does it contain MMS messages?
• Have you also noticed any crashes as well, or just the "App not responding" dialogs (with the stop and wait buttons)?

I can confirm I'm having the same issue. It's confined to v1.5 without a doubt- if I roll back I have no issues at all. Hangs when pressing "send" same as @tbart, only on longer conversations.

i have dozens of conversations, many of which are quite long. I've been using this app as my daily driver for a while.

Let me know if/how to contribute logs, I'd be glad to help.

UPDATE
On second glance I think this issue may be tied to MMS. I cannot reply to a thread with images in it, but once those images are deleted I can reply fine. I can send and receive MMS, and continue to chat just fine. The issue appears to have something to do with either long chats with multiple MMS, or MMS that existed prior to the update.

I also have this issue. Longer text-conversations with a mix of text and MMS. Long texts are also send as MMS, so some conversations should have plenty of MMS-messages.

As @tbart said, Messages will show a black screen when entering a long conversation, and if you leave the app open for approx. 1 minute it will eventually open the conversation. After this my phone shows "app not responding" whenever I try to scroll in the conversation or try to send messages.

I don't know enough about Android to answer your questions about the length of the conversations, but I do have around 28.000 text messages and 4.000 MMS-messages (just did a backup), most of which are long text-messages.

It showed up at v1.5.0, I did not experience this behavior in v1.4.0.

Having the same issue on my Rooted Pixel 6. Was fine before. Can't respond to any messages without it freezing and eventually crashing.
