Gen 1 and above wolfdogs (have not yet tested other dog types or PetAI creatures, but due to results of testing, suspect all suffer from the same issue) don't recover from mortal wounds when poultices or bandages are applied. They also don't appear to take healing from items at all, even when not mortally wounded. These issues do not appear in gen 0 wolfdogs.
Additionally, while trying to determine if the above issue was a mod conflict or not, I noticed that my two gen 1+ animals were playing the attack animation, but not actually attacking. The bear I had them set on didn't react or take damage. Both dogs that attacked successfully were gen 0, while the unsuccessful dogs were gen 10 and 11.
Manually setting the gen 10 and 11 dogs to gen 0 fixed both issues. Setting the previously gen 0 dogs to gen 10 caused the same issues. Setting all dogs to 0 resolved the issues. Setting all dogs to 10 broke all of them. Setting dogs to gen 1-9 had the same results as gen 10.
Because I know PetAI is built on the vanilla tamed elk, I tried injuring and then healing a standard tamed elk, then one set to gen 1, then gen 10. Of course I couldn't test the attack bug, since elk can't be set to attack, but the healing issue was identical.
Based on these results, I believe the problem is in the underlying elk code. I recognize that this makes the bug difficult, if not impossible, to fix. If it can't be patched, maybe a config option could be added to prevent breeding entirely, or bred puppies could remain at gen 0 instead of advancing in generations, and some other method could be used to decrease the rate of obedience decay? I'm sorry I can't be of more help here.
Some additional notes that may or may not be relevant:
- no form of bandage or poultice worked on mortally wounded gen 1+ wolfdogs (or elk). all were tested
- behavior unaffected by whether dogs were set to Follow or Stay
- behavior unaffected by aggression settings
- behavior persisted after logging out and logging back in
- both affected dogs were pregnant, but so was one unaffected dog (sidenote: possible pregnancy toggle still glitched? toggle wasn't visibly switching back on as with previous form of bug, and I'm not 100% certain I didn't just swap the toggle over too late, so not reporting as a bug at this time)
