This has long been a pet peeve of mine and I think I finally figured out what's causing it. If a ranged character with multiple attacks per round fires their weapon while in a melee threat area, thus triggering an attack of opportunity, they will end up losing the rest of their attacks for that round if the initial target goes down. They are not able to redirect their additional attacks like they normally would.
If the initial target falls unconscious, the ranged character will automatically continue to fire at them until they run out of attacks or until the target dies. If the target dies before the character runs out of attacks, the character will visually stop firing, but arrows and arrow trails equivalent to the remaining number of attacks will still travel from the ranged character to the initial target's corpse. I did not check to see if this is a purely visual bug or if this actually depletes ammo.
