Manifesto
Hiya! I’m Liz (technically Elizabeth), a second year computer science student. I’m applying for the role of General Secretary because HackSoc has been an important part of my university experience! This hasn’t just been as a member, but also as the Welfare Secretary last year. Through that role, I gained an insight to how much coordination and organisation is required to run a society smoothly. Because of all this, I would love the opportunity to be your General Secretary and help to continue to ensure the society runs as smoothly as possible while supporting the President and the rest of the committee.
During my time as Welfare Secretary, I worked to my fullest in my role with supporting members and to ensure a welcoming, inclusive space! Some of the things I achieved:
- Acting as a voice for members
- Ensured all events prioritized welfare (helping to organise movie night!!)
- Created a welfare microsoft form so members could anonymously report concerns if they didn’t feel comfortable to speak/message directly.
- Helped with workshops, for instance, co-giving the "Advent of Code Workshop" and made PowerPoint slides look pretty in other workshops!
- Met and helped lots of amazing people!
Alongside my involvement in HackSoc, I was also elected as a team leader for my group project which has provided me with organisational, communication and leadership skills. I often had to take jobs from my team admin including: booking rooms (I have booked over 20 rooms so far!), organising meetings, keeping track of attendance, taking meeting minutes and ensuring members stayed updated when they couldn’t attend. These responsibilities are closely in line with the many duties of a general secretary, and so I should be able to bring my best abilities to the role!
If I was elected, I promise to:
- Help run organised and efficient committee meetings
- Support the President and the rest of committee in keeping HackSoc running smoothly
- I would post short meeting summaries in Discord so everyone in the committee can quickly see what was discussed if they were unable to attend (or if they simply forgot (me, most likely)!).
- And of course, I will ensure HackSoc continues to book the best rooms, such as CS A07/AO1 and Exchange LT3.
