Sitemap.xml & I18N

https://iatistandard.org/sitemap.xml Redirects to https://iatistandard.org/en/sitemap.xml (at least for me). This only has pages in English.

https://iatistandard.org/fr/sitemap.xml is a different URL which only has French pages.

Are we sure Google sees both site maps?

Do we want to, as many pages under fr URL's actually have English content on and may count as duplicate content.

Is this important, as on any half decent site Google will find all the pages anyway regardless of sitemaps?

I found https://pypi.org/project/django_hreflang/ but have not reviewed if this is the best way; it may be possible to just add in our templates.
