Description
This is a brainstorming of how to assist more comments through UI changes.
To stimulate more comments, the comment UI needs to be closer to the content. (The content primarily is the sound playback/visualization area, not necessarily the description.)
Long descriptions are desireable but writing them currently punishes the uploader by moving comments further away.
YouTube vs current layout:
Suggestions:
- fold description and tags to 3 lines max like YouTube does and allow unfolding. Only make content clickable after unfolding.
- move the file format information into the sidebar (below download)
- move the report function into an icon or even a ... menu like YouTube does
- use a single-line comment input to motivate short comments and make already exisitng comments show up further up the site, and only expand it after it is selected, like YouTube does
- consolidate rating info and your rating action into one element and keep it in the sidebar, near the download button, replace "Your rating:" with "Rate now:" if not rated yet, "Rating:" if your own sound or already rated. Reduce the text size and spacing of that label. If the user is able to rate, the stars area should have a rounded light grey background like the thumbsup/down buttons on YouTube to indicate interactiveness and react to mouse-over like Freesound's "Follow" button does
- move category information to the sidebar (below downloads)
- lower sound title font size
This is based on the assumption that more comments is a goal. It should have lower priority than comment moderation tools for non-admins. In my opinion it should only be considered after users have the ability to block other users from having their comments visible below their content. Currently, without moderation tools and comment/forum-only moderators, I don't find more comments to be desirable.
For showing the current UI where you can rate and comparison, here are 2 sounds with moderate or ultra short descriptions/tag lists are also affected:
