Context

Horizon 1000 is a $50M initiative by the Gates Foundation and OpenAI (announced Jan 20, 2026) to bring AI-powered tools to 1,000 primary healthcare clinics across sub-Saharan Africa by 2028, starting with Rwanda.

Core details:

• Target: 1,000 clinics + surrounding communities by 2028
• Start: Rwanda (partnering with the country's 4x4 health reform)
• What AI does: Patient intake, triage, diagnostic suggestions, paperwork reduction, appointment scheduling
• Problem: Sub-Saharan Africa is short ~5.6M healthcare workers
• Tech stack: OpenAI models (GPT/o-series)
• Partners so far: Penda Health (Kenya) — AI clinical copilot study published July 2025

Horizon 1000 is focused on clinic-based AI. But most first-contact care in sub-Saharan Africa happens outside clinics — via CHWs doing home visits. Trij extends Horizon 1000's reach:

• WhatsApp-native — zero data cost, works on any phone
• CHW-first design — built for low-literacy, low-smartphone users
• Proven demand — active pilots with CHWs in Kenya/Uganda
• Bias-audited — skin tone fairness evaluated (FST I-VI)
• OpenAI stack — uses GPT for triage, same family as Horizon 1000

Trij is not a competing clinic tool — it is the community/CHW layer that Horizon 1000 needs to truly reach 1,000 clinics AND their surrounding communities.
