The Living and Dead Prince A collaboration by Machiavelli, Ricci, Marriott, Gemini, and Wells.

Translation is an act of resurrection, but no two ghosts speak with the same voice. This project treats the text of The Prince and its translations not as a static document, but as a fluid data set. By algorithmically comparing the Marriott and Ricci translations, this generator exposes the friction between interpretations.

The layout mimics the tension of the translation process:

Convergence: When the translators align (for sequences of 2+ words), the text heals into a single, centered narrative stream.

Divergence: When word choices differ, the page fractures. The distinct voices run side-by-side, analyzed in real-time by Natural Language Processing engines that graph the variance in sentiment, grammar, and linguistic density.

The result is a novel document that visually breathes—expanding and contracting in convergences and divergences of the living and the dead.

Wow this is great! As far as I can tell, W.K. Marriott's translation came out in 1908 and Luigi Ricci's translation came out in 1909. Assuming that's correct, it's interesting to see how contemporaries viewed the same text. If it's incorrect, it's interesting to see how the more recent translation sought to improve on the existing one 😄.
