PS5 reports external USB M.2 SSD as unreadable after flashing image with Balena Etcher

I am correctly flashing the image onto the storage device using Balena Etcher.
The flashing process completes successfully and Balena reports that everything is OK.

However, when I connect the device to my PS5, the console reports that the storage is unreadable and asks me to format the drive.
I don’t understand where the issue is coming from.

For context:

The device is an external USB enclosure

Inside is a 500 GB M.2 SSD

The enclosure is connected directly to the PS5 via USB

At this stage, the image seems properly written, but the PS5 does not recognize the filesystem at all.
