How do I change on which monitor does the greeter start on? (Hyprland)

The greeter is awesome, but I have one issue, which is that it always shows up on my secondary monitor.

I saw this line in hyprland-greeter-config.conf:

Monitors auto-detected by Hyprland at runtime

But I'm unsure what to really do with this info when it comes to the greeter.

Hey mate, yea the default config for hyprland compositor is auto but just like with normal hyprland you can set a primary monitor. in /etc/greetd/hyprland-greeter-config.conf

Example:

monitor = DP-1, 1920x1080@144, 0x0, 1
monitor = DP-2, 1920x1080@144, 1920x0, 1

The 0x0 will set it as primary. the 0 will make it go right, if you want it to go left you just put a - in front of 1920x0 e.g. -1920x0.

Short answer is on wayland, not really. If this was built with X11 as the compositor I would have an option to mirror main which would solve this issue but on wayland the compositor won't do it. The only real workaround probably is set your 'always visible' monitor as a primary, and the monitor on the KVM as the secondary.

This was not working for me since my second monitor is loaded quicker then my primary.

However I did manage to get the greeter to start on my primary by setting a workspace:

workspace = name:1, monitor:DP-2
exec-once = hyprctl dispatch workspace 1

Having experimented with something similar with sysc-walls I think I might actually be able to implement this. I'll add as feature request.

Known workarounds from this thread:

• Set primary monitor via Hyprland monitor = DP-X, …, 0x0, 1 in /etc/greetd/hyprland-greeter-config.conf
• If monitor detection order is wrong: workspace = name:1, monitor:DP-X + exec-once = hyprctl dispatch workspace 1

Multi-monitor greeter support is on the roadmap per owner comments.
