Use this script to have a relaxed conversation with your kid about their app idea. Record the conversation (phone voice memo works great), then transcribe it and feed it to Claude with /idea-capture.
Tips for the interviewer:
- Keep it conversational, not interrogation-style
- Let them ramble - the best ideas come from tangents
- If they draw while talking, photograph the drawings
- Don't correct or filter their ideas - capture everything
- "That's cool, tell me more about that" is your best friend
- It's okay if answers overlap or circle back
Start casual. You're just chatting.
"So you mentioned you had an idea for an app. What made you think of it? Was there something that bugged you, or something you wished existed?"
Follow-ups if needed:
- "Has that happened to you, or did you see it happen to someone else?"
- "What do you do right now when that happens? Like, what's the annoying workaround?"
- "Who else do you think has this problem?"
"Okay so if your app existed tomorrow, who's the first person you'd show it to? Like, who would be MOST excited about it?"
Follow-ups:
- "What about them specifically - why would they care?"
- "Would this be more for kids, adults, or everyone?"
- "Would people use it alone, or with friends/family?"
"Alright, walk me through it. Pretend I just downloaded your app and opened it for the first time. What do I see? What do I do first?"
Follow-ups:
- "And then what happens?"
- "What's the coolest part? Like, the thing that would make someone go 'whoa, that's awesome'?"
- "Is there anything else it does, or is that the main thing?"
"Close your eyes for a sec. Picture your app. What colors do you see? Does it feel fun and playful, or clean and serious, or something else?"
Follow-ups:
- "What apps do you use that LOOK the way you want yours to look?"
- "Any apps you think look terrible that yours should NOT look like?"
This is a great time to say: "Want to sketch that out? Just grab a piece of paper and draw what you're imagining - doesn't have to be pretty."
"There are a million apps out there. Why would someone pick yours over just googling it or using something else?"
Follow-ups:
- "Is there anything like it that already exists? What would yours do differently?"
- "If you could only keep ONE feature and had to throw away the rest, which one stays?"
"Last one - imagine it's a year from now and your app is a huge hit. What does that look like? What are people saying about it?"
- Transcribe the recording (use your phone's transcription, Whisper, or any speech-to-text tool)
- Photograph any sketches or drawings (good lighting, flat on a table)
- Start a Claude Code session in this project directory
- Run:
/idea-captureand paste the transcript - Run:
/sketchon each photograph - Review the generated plan together and iterate
The goal is to get from "cool idea" to "working prototype" as fast as possible. Claude will handle the technical details - your kid just needs to describe what they want and say whether it looks right.
