What is Cache?

A cache is a high-speed memory subsystem that stores frequently accessed data to reduce access time and improve processor performance. The basic working principle of a cache is to store data that is likely to be used again in the near future, thereby reducing the number of times data needs to be read from the main memory.

This structure demonstrates the hierarchical nature of memory access in modern computer systems, where faster but smaller memory levels (like L1 and L2 Caches) are used to store frequently accessed data and instructions, reducing the need to access slower but larger memory levels.

If some data isn't found in faster but smaller levels, the computer should seek it from by accessing slower but larger memory levels, which is called Cache Miss (opposite to Cache Hit).

Address Mapping

Since cache is faster but smaller, the computer should decide which compartment to store when data comes from memory.

Direct-Mapped Cache

A direct-mapped cache is the simplest form of cache organization. Each main memory address maps to a unique location in the cache. The mapping process involves:

N-Way Set Associative Cache

A n-way set associative cache is divided into multiple sets, each containing multiple ways. Each main memory address maps to a specific set, but can be stored in any way within that set.
