hyprkool compatibilty (2d grid workspaces)

Hello,

I have been working on replicating this setup for a week now : reddit 2d workspace grid setup
And I don't understand how they "tweaked" qs-overview to display hyprkool's workspaces instead of hyprland's.

It could be that my hyprkool installation is wrong and runs in parallel with hyprland's workspaces when it probably shouldn't.

But I am curious on how OP "tweaked" qs-overview like they mentioned, because they managed to display hyprkool's workspaces ID (x, y) inside of qs-overview which is even more intriguing.

On my end I have hyprland default's workspaces displayed with their default 1 dimensional ID x and when I switch workspace in hyprkool nothing changes on the overview. And when I switch workspaces with hyprland's controls, then I see something moving with the overview. Changing activity doesn't change anything either, while on OP's screen activities seem so switch the whole grid on a Z axis.

It's also possible that OP had the activities in a Y axis in the overview while the hyprkool's Y axis would be Overview's Z axis which is even cooler.

Could anyone please help. I think it looks so cool.

@fsilly hey, this does look really interesting but i can’t really help rn, my exams are going on and i won’t be free till 1 may.
Also the post itself is 5 months old and the plugin has not been maintained for around 7 months, and this project has also gone through some drastic changes over 5 months, and not to forget the hyprland updates. so a lot of stuff could be broken or not work the same anymore. makes it kinda hard to debug what’s actually going on

good thing tho, i found OP’s github and they seem active there

Here is my leading idea.

It's possible that OP modified services/HyprlandData.qml to work with hyprkool CLI rather than hyprctl (which is incompatible with hyprkool).
It would require parsing the long result printed by hyprkool info monitors-all-info which is the equivalent of hyprctl clients, workspaces.

I think it's the most likely. If it works and it doesn't look easy, it would explain everything.

@fsilly Hi, thank you for your interest on my post. I'm still using the 2D overview.

Here is how I did it:

1. Maintain a hyprkool and compile it myself.
2. Parse the info from hyprkool info monitors-all-info for infos of the clients
3. Use hyprkool switch-to-workspace, hyprkool focus-window to switch workspace.

If you are interested, I just uploaded the quickshell-overview I modified, also the hyprkool.

It would be really cool to see this repo got hyprkool or some 2D overview features!

I managed to make it work with the Wed Apr 29 version.

I just need to clean up the code and the commit tree and then I will open a pull request.
