Curse of Leeching only drains the player's health and repairs the item if the item is in one of the "normal" inventory slots or hotbar, not the offhand or any armour slot. Perhaps this is intentional but it seems counterintuitive.
As a suggestion, I think it should if anything work the other way around, only taking effect if the item is being worn as armour or held in the main or offhand (or perhaps the hotbar). The curse is obviously meant to be dangerous but I have actually died before to randomly picking up a cursed piece of armour from a zombie and not realising in time and frankly that feels like a bit much.
