Samples sounding like they've gone through a bit crusher

Not too long ago I built myself a Radio Music, but didn't find the time to really test it until only recently. At first I hadn't realized it, as I was testing with short samples, but now that I was listening to larger samples the sound quality turned out to be pretty bad. Initially I felt it sounded distorted so I turned the potentiometer on the board down to no avail, but it really sounds as if mangled by a bit crusher. I tried the mod using the 100K resistor which only made things worse as it added a high pitched whine.

Any tips anyone?

Update: I've swapped parts out with one of my Prok's. There seem to be no issues with the boards and sticking the Teensy on the Prok didn't result in any change in the quality of the sound. So still no clue what's wrong here.

Not sure what that might be, one issue people reported a while back was uploading their own samples that were very quiet, then boosting the gain and adding noise that way. Are you using the samples in the 'suggested audio' pack?

Hi Tom, it has been a while, and I'm sorry for not responding any earlier. I have finally found some time to look into the issue.
I have tested both 'own' samples as well as from the suggested audio pack.
Been checking the properties of the files, but they were all within the range: mono, 16bit, .wav files.

This evening I read somewhere that someone had similar issues which seemed to be related to the pitch, so I set 'pitchmode' to 0, instead of 1 in the settings file and that solved the distortion issue. I've set it back to 1 again to verify and it was back. I would like to use the pitch though.

I fried my SD card after that as I had the module in my hand and somehow caused a short circuit, but if I remember correctly, these were the settings:
