When an audio signal is sampled at some sample rate $f_s$, all frequencies in the signal up to the half the sample rate ($f_N=f_s/2$, the Nyquist frequency) are represented in the sampled signal. Any frequencies in the original signal above $f_N$ are reflected into the frequency range $0$ to $f_N$, a phenomenon called [aliasing](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aliasing), and are mixed together with the signals originally in this frequency band. Once aliasing occurs, it is usually impossible to remove the spurious aliased frequencies from the sampled signal, and so quite a lot of effort is expended in DSP programming to remove or reduce the amplitude of frequencies that would alias, before such aliasing occurs.
