Markdown syntax displayed in excerpt

Repro:

1. Write a post with some markdown syntax in the body.
2. Do not fill out an excerpt.
3. Publish the post.

Expected:
Excerpt displayed on homepage only contains words.

Actual:
Excerpt contains characters from markdown syntax.
