Currently, you don’t need to click/select the model inside the viewport. Instead, please use the model list dropdown on the top-left (the model list) to switch/select the model you want.

Regarding the more convenient selection / picking tools you mentioned (e.g., quick select, better interaction helpers, etc.), we agree they would improve the workflow — we’re planning to integrate these into our new editor in a future update.
