Joystick Gremlin throws exception and action dropdown loses Map to Keyboard option R14

Joystick Gremlin starts throwing an exception every time I select Hat1 now. After clearing the exception the pre-existing hat mapping appears anyway. I have Hat as Button, with North and South a double tap, East and West a single map to keyboard. Was working great. However, once that exception is thrown I can't add any additional mappings to the hat.

I'm only trying to change East to a double tap. I delete the single map to keyboard, exception, but it deletes. Now if I so much as scroll down or up the hat screen it throws exception. Always the same exception.

And I add the double tap, same exception but it adds. However, now I can't map to keyboard under single or double because it is no longer an option. Along with several other missing things.

Nothing that I know caused it. It just starts happening. It does seem to be related to the hat mapping. I wish I could tell you how to reproduce it. Now it happens all the time so I can't reproduce how it began.

Cannot get Double tap working again in hat ever. I can delete the single map to keyboard and still add a new single map to keyboard. I can add the double tap action, but not map to keyboard under single press or double press. This happened a couple weeks ago and I got it working again by completely starting over with a new config. But I have too many mappings now to start over. If I Reload the config, exception. Close JG and reopen, exception. R14

You're running the initial version of R14, can you try with the newest version R14.1. Not guaranteed that it will fix the issue (likely not) but it will provide better error information. The drop down issue likely is linked to the action misunderstanding the "behavior" to use for that action which maybe the exception somehow messes up. Can you reproduce the error in a new profile or is it isolated to this one profile?

This bit makes it sound as if the error wasn't always happening, if so what changed in between?

I'll download R14.1 and I'll try a new profile to see if it will happen there. Not sure if anything changed, tho it seems like it might have. I'll look thru it and see if I can remember changing anything prior. I know I made a backup at some point, I'll also try that and see what changed, tho it might have several changes over time. Gotta add, it's a great product! I'm enjoying learning what I can do with it.

Sounds good. I have an idea of what would cause the disappearing issue but that shouldn't happen, so it'd be interesting to figure out if there is a way to trigger that condition to occur which then would be the root cause to fix.

Is it possible that Python is really not liking the space in "North East"?

No it's a made up thing in Gremlin anyhow, there may be a typo an conversion fails or similar. I'll have to look into where things go awry.

I did have a earlier clean copy of the config, so I have been adding the changes I made to the prior to see where it might fail. I think I may have added everything to it that the problematic profile has. However, the exception did not occur.

I do see the dropdown problem on the now up to date prior one, so it may not be related to the exception. It does occur only on the hat as buttons. All other Double tap dropdowns where I try to add a map to keyboard do work. It appears to only occur in a Double tap in the hat. And that did work at first or I would not have the hat double taps working that I do have. Not clear what causes it. When I first reopened the prior one hat Double tap was already not showing the dropdown before I made any changes.

I had North mapped to double tap, the single pressed was assigned but I had never assigned the double press. When I try, I get the dropdown problem.

I did download R14.1 as suggested, but Windows 11 "App Security" blocked it for being unsigned. :( Lots of apps are unsigned never was an issue before. It appears that since it was a new computer 3 weeks ago, App security is not initially turned on. After reviewing the system for awhile, it decides whether or not the computer is an appropriate match for app security, and turned it on. Thanks Microsoft. I supposed that's why I never had a problem with R14, it may have been before Windows 11 turned on this "security feature".

There is no way to whitelist an app. So I turned the entire app blocker off. I don't get the blocked message anymore but R14.1 still does not run. I may try deleting it and doing a fresh download and unzip.

I got the exception to happen in the config file I was modifying. Unfortunately it was something I hadn't thought to try before: After each change I made I saved the config file and retried hat, makes sense right? Nothing caused the exception. I of course made one last save when I was done and exited. Next time I started up JG I loaded the config and selected hat and got the exception. Perhaps I should have saved exited and reloaded after each change. Whew. That's all the time I can spend on it for now.

Fixed with #d104f288875edc9171abb0a11232cce843cc7a4f, it was caused by the number of buttons changing not updating while the action is selected, only upon selecting another input and then selecting the hat again.
