That fixed it. I had just two entries under video: height = 1440 and width = 1920. The height value was bizarre - should have been 1200.
However...
If I then set it back to 1920x1200 in Frontend's settings it works after the first automated restart, but fails in the same way if I manually reset or power cycle.
Each time, I have to clear the video settings in the toml to get back again. Sometimes when doing this I noticed it was once again set to 1920x1440, but generally it was 1920x1200. I'm very confident I never selected 1920x1440 so something odd is going on there.

I just turned my Multisystem 2 on after it had been off for a few hours and it went straight into Frontend no problem. But after turning it off and on again I got the same as above. Same for the next two power cycles.

maybe the first thing to try is on your sd card in zaparoo/frontend.toml there should be [video] section. try delete that whole section first.
