Authentication Failed

If I try to login I get the following error:

error: b'[AUTHENTICATIONFAILED] Invalid credentials (Failure)'

Just tested it and I get the same error when entering an incorrect password. When entering the correct password, I get the following error imaplib.error: b'[ALERT] Application-specific password required: https://support.google.com/accounts/answer/185833 (Failure)'.

It seems like Gmail wants you to generate an application specific password - this can be done by going to your Google Account settings, navigate to the Security tab on the left side and in the Signing in to Google tab, at the end, it has a App passwords options - there you can create a new app-specific password, for example select a custom app and give it a name and Google should give you the password.

I can confirm that after obtaining an app-specific password, I can use it alongside my email address to login successfully over IMAP.

Other issues you might find is if IMAP is disabled for your Gmail account, in which case from your inbox, click on the cog on the top right and select All settings - then navigate to Forwarding and POP/IMAP tab and make sure IMAP Access is set to enabled.
