Hangs when audio starts playing

I managed to compile this on a Thinkpad T420 running kali linux (yes I know I should install a proper desktop distro) with some figuring, but when I run it with sound the command line stops updating and the song starts playing. I very well could have done something wrong compiling it, this is the first time I've messed around with compiling anything from source. Is this just a square peg in a round hole type situation?

You are using PulseAudio, this is a known problem on today's Linux machines :) Just disable the sound and the demo should play without stopping.
