A11Y P3.1: Make publication tables easier to understand cell by cell for screen-reader users #5547

Description

User Story(s)

As a screen-reader user, I'd like publication tables to expose clear row and column context, in order to understand each value without having to guess what it belongs to.

Problem we are solving

The current publication table markup appears to rely on partial semantics and may not provide enough context when users navigate cell by cell.

Why this matters to users

A table should reduce cognitive effort, not increase it. When row context is weak, users may hear values without enough information to understand what each one means.

Desired outcome

A table experience in which users can move through the information and consistently hear the context they need.

Scope

  • Table caption or equivalent naming
  • Row and column header relationships
  • Screen-reader verification of table navigation

Out of scope

  • A redesign of the table content model

Conditions of satisfaction

  • Publication tables include a caption or equivalent table name.
  • Row and column header relationships are clear.
  • Screen-reader table navigation confirms context is preserved cell by cell.
