Not to hijack this issue but I had the same problem with no icons. I was building for the cyd_resistive environment. I was trying to find the Platform->Upload Filesystem Image tree item for this environment but it wasn't there. The m5dial did have it so I started playing around and found that the only way to get it was to add this line to the PlatfromIO.ini file. I'm not sure why it doesn't carry over from the cyd_base environment. I'm assuming this would be needed for all of the other CYD environment configs as well.

This is the original CYD build for a resistive CYD

The docs really need some love. (PR welcome?)

In the end this worked for me:

fs:
    pio run -t buildfs

build:
    pio run -e cyd_buttons -t build_merged

upload:
    # pio run -e cyd_buttons -t upload
    esptool.py --chip esp32 --port /dev/cu.wchusbserial210 write_flash 0x0 .pio/build/cyd_buttons/merged-flash.bin

Seems like you first need to build buildfs then build build_merged.
Upload isn't setup as usual - but uploading manually it worked.

I now have icons 🎉

Side note: I had to replace python with python3 for my env.
