🎨 Designers welcome — no coding needed

Clarvia is a free, open-source bereavement checklist that helps families in Luxembourg navigate overwhelming administrative tasks after losing a loved one. The project is run by Clarvia ASBL, a Luxembourg non-profit — entirely volunteer-built.

We're looking for a designer who can help us define a cohesive visual identity. The current website was built functionality-first and would benefit from the eye of someone with real design sensibility.

Why this matters: When someone loses a family member, they face dozens of urgent tasks — declaring the death within 24 hours, arranging the funeral, handling pensions, inheritance, taxes — all while grieving. Clarvia turns scattered government information into a clear, step-by-step guide. Looking trustworthy and calm matters — families arrive at this site during one of the hardest moments of their lives.

What we're looking for

A brand identity direction that covers:

  • Color palette — colors that feel calm, trustworthy, and dignified (the site deals with bereavement)
  • Typography — font pairing recommendations (headings + body) that balance warmth with clarity
  • Visual tone — what should the overall feeling be? (e.g., muted and respectful? gently warm? institutional but human?)
  • Logo direction — the current logo was AI-generated as a placeholder. A thoughtful alternative or refinement would be welcome

This is the starting point — once we have a direction we trust, we'll open follow-up issues for specific components (hero imagery, icons, print templates, etc.).

How to contribute

  1. Post your proposal as images/mockups in the comments below — a mood board, style tile, or sample layout showing your direction
  2. Include a brief note on the reasoning behind your choices
  3. No need to build anything — just show us what you'd do

Format: PNG/JPG mockups, Figma links, PDF mood boards — whatever works for you.

License: By submitting, you agree your work may be used under CC-BY-4.0. You will be credited as a contributor.

Current state

The live site is at clarvia.org. The checklist alpha is at clarvia.org/en/checklist.

Everything you see was built quickly to validate the concept — fonts, colors, hero image, and logo are all placeholders that served their purpose. We're now ready for something more considered.

Context

  • Audience: Families (often elderly or in distress), civic-tech reviewers, grant evaluators, public bodies
  • Languages: English, French, German
  • Tone guidelines: Warm, direct, never performatively sympathetic. Respectful but not clinical.
  • Tech: Next.js + Tailwind CSS — but you don't need to know that. We'll handle implementation.

Thank you for helping bereaved families. ❤️
