Reduce static ‘rush, pause, and fire’ combat, even if only aesthetic (causing ships to orbit/encircle each other in some conditions, at least)
Graphical effect as items such as stun, shot repeller, knockback, spike trap, spikey death,and counter effect activate.
Successful attacks should display a ‘strike’ effect rather than simply be... absorbed.
A background (preferrably moving or procedurally-generated)
More variation in firing sounds
Variation in bullet shapes by ship

At level start, assassins should be invisible until first strike.
Mothership spawns drones, each fast and inflicting a small quantity of its damage.
Shields visually flicker upon being struck by drainer laser.
Friendly lasers, enemy lasers and boss lasers should be of unique colours.
Boss lasers should be wider with separate sound effect.
