The 'Set opening tab property for new tabs' not functioning quite right

I use Firefox and I regularly use this extension. It is incredibly handy for me, so thank you. However, with this option disabled direct download links do not close automatically.

Imagine a list of download links with two columns - one column with links to descriptions and the other with direct links to download.

Lasso the descriptions -> Click one of the newly opened tabs -> Close the tab
• Option enabled - returns me to the tab with the list (the parent I guess).
• Option disabled - takes me to the tab to the right (or the left if we're already on the last tab).

Lasso the direct links
• Option enabled - new tabs are opened, and closed again once the download has started.
• Option disabled - new tabs are opened, but remain open until manually closed.

I prefer the way closing tabs works with the option disabled, but this doesn't automatically close direct download links as it does when the option is enabled.

I am aware of browser.tabs.selectOwnerOnClose, but I want this to remain as default (true).
