Optimization of the vessel’s navigation route cannot be performed dynamically based on the initially planned trajectory. Unlike terrestrial autonomous driving systems—which support real-time path adjustment in response to unforeseen obstacles—the maritime navigation system operates under fundamentally different constraints. Specifically, route modifications during transit are not feasible in the event of sudden environmental hazards (e.g., seismic events or tsunamis), as the system lacks continuous environmental perception and adaptive decision-making capabilities. Instead, route weighting—incorporating meteorological, oceanographic, and geophysical risk factors—is conducted ex ante, during the pre-voyage planning phase.

The current implementation functions as a static optimal path solver that relies solely on the environment known at planning time; it does not constitute an intelligent maritime decision-support system capable of online sensing, situational assessment, or iterative replanning. For instance, suppose the original plan scheduled passage through the Sea of Japan on Day 3. If, however, an M8.0 earthquake strikes Japan and triggers a tsunami in the Sea of Japan on Day 2, the original route becomes unsafe and operationally infeasible. Under such circumstances, the system cannot autonomously revise the route in real time. Rather, it requires manual intervention: acquisition of updated environmental data, offline recomputation of an alternative optimal path, and subsequent redefinition of the navigation plan.
