@stringertheory mentioned this in hipchat and thought I'd throw this idea in here for posterity. At the risk of putting words in his mouth, Mike was saying that he was thinking about other ways of creating irregular polygons and Delaunay triangulation came to mind (example).
Definitely worth a shot!
