Modify functions to take nonbinary author identities

We've focused on the alpha on breaking down the male-female binary in the way we treat the text of documents, but we still use 'male' and 'female' as the two categories for authors to potentially belong to in several of our functions. For the beta, we should make these functions more flexible to account for authors that are not male or female.
