Having problems with running through Wine

I’ve tested NewPlayer on Ubuntu 22.04, and it runs without any problems on my end. NewPlayer has better compatibility than the original version. The issue you’re encountering might be related to your Wine version or the specific Linux distribution you're using.

Yeah nevermind even after trying out more stuff with Lutris and stuff it still doesn't work. I'll send more info in the next message in a bit

So I mostly followed this guy's guide on installing Ballance using Lutris:

But with some modifications:

1. I found it was better to remove all the DLL overrides, without it I wouldn't get a window popping up at all
2. I disabled the DLSS thing in Runner options > Graphics (only visible with Advanced mode on). I don't think this matters because the game's so old... as well as my PC.
3. I enabled debugging info and crash dialogs. I don't think this changes anything.
4. I restricted the amount of cores used to 1. I don't think this changes anything.
5. I modified the registry manually, referencing a Lutris script someone else had made. I added the Fullscreen (0) and the VideoMode (1024768) values to the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Wow6432Node\Ballance\Settings key/node/folder. Idk I'm not good at registry terminology

More info:

• The furthest I have ever progressed is to the "Game load failed!" error; the log says Failed to open file: Z:\home\notarobot\Games\Ballance\Bin\..\base.cmo. Using Dolphin I can see that the file at ~/Games/Ballance/base.cmo exists and has a SHA256 sum of 4adcf457eab13168a59144c538b146a410208c5f98e3bb8b1c217a638c80177b. Ever since then, I've never gotten the file open error again.
  
• Here's some info about my system:
  
• The game is located in /home/notarobot/Games/Ballance/, and the wine prefix is at /home/notarobot/wine/ballance-prefix.
• Here's a backtrace of my latest startup attempt: backtrace.txt. Note that this isn't my furthest attempt.

After reviewing the backtrace, it looks like the issue is still related to a path problem. You might want to check your Wine configuration and ensure that the correct Unix path is properly mapped to the expected Windows-like path in Wine.

Just to clarify, the registry has no effect on NewPlayer, so modifying it won’t help in this case.

I'm sorry, I don't really understand what you meant. The game directory according to wine is Z:\home\notarobot\Games\Ballance. Are you suggesting I make the folder names lowercase? Or do I need to put it in the C drive somehow?

You could try moving the game into Wine's C drive instead of using the Z: path. This might help avoid potential path-related issues.

Alright I moved it to C:\Ballance (a.k.a. /home/notarobot/wine/ballance-prefix/drive_c/Ballance) and it still doesn't work.
I thought that maybe it was using the Z drive again so I launched it with Wine's version of cmd by specifically going to C:\Ballance\Bin and doing Player.exe... but it did not help
