This is a big one. It seems like quaternions are probably the answer (this is out of my wheelhouse).

I'd prefer if there was some proper quaternion infrastructure added to ptmath, instead of inlining them spuriously for ball-ball resolution. Some of the rendering code uses quaternions, so if we did develop some infra, we could have the rendering code use it, too.
