how to save position?

Dear Mr. Bergo, 
I know that to write a program is endless work, but I got stucked at very beginning. 
I put my figures on a board and then I want to save them and then start a game from the given postions. 
Neither of these action works. I do not know how to save it. I do not know how to start the engine (constantly failing). 
I have Ubuntu 22.04.
So my issue is saving and starting a game.
