Yes it should honor the quiet property that can be set on a GDALRaster object: ds$quiet <- TRUE. That is a per-object setting which defaults to FALSE. It should turn off progress reporting, warnings and some informational messages when using methods of the object.

The development version also now honors the GDAL config option: set_config_option("CPL_LOG_ERRORS=OFF"), in case some other GDAL messages are being printed that need to be silenced, in general (#911).
