packaging issues

I tried installing kaa-base + kaa-metadata from here
http://pypi.python.org/pypi/kaa-base
http://pypi.python.org/pypi/kaa-metadata

But the releases don't seem to comply with each other, the installation of kaa-metadata says 'kaa.base not installed'. also pip works but easy_install throws an AttributeError inside discover_kaa_eggs

The two master branches of github install fine together, but kaa-base has not been not tagged after 0.6.0

The packages could be included in the next release of MediaCore.
Do you plan an interim release or tagging before 1.0?
At least a newer kaa-base would be helpful.

Making a new release of kaa-base has been a TODO for too long. I will do one next week.

That said, I was about to easy_install kaa-metadata on a fresh system without any trouble. It grabbed kaa-base-0.99.2dev-384-2b73caca from pypi which installed fine.

Can you provide the traceback you saw that involved discovery_kaa_eggs()?

From a clear 2.7.3 virtualenv. Same with 2.6.8.
At the end, at the line

if sys.path == self.last_sys_path

it appears that sys is None.

I can reproduce this inside a virtualenv. I'm not sure why a virtualenv should behave differently.

Anyway I won't get a chance to dig into this until at least the weekend, or early next week. Thanks for reporting it.

Just to rule this out, does importing cStringIO within your virtualenv work at all?

yes, that works. I recreated the venv just for kaa-base (using 'virtualenv --no-site-packages --distribute').

$ virtualenv --version
1.7.1.2

This is with Fedora 17 (Python 2.7.3)

I can't reproduce this on Ubuntu 12.04 (also virtualenv 1.7.1.2 and Python 2.7.3):

$ . kaa/bin/activate
(kaa)$ cd kaa-base

(distribute is not a valid setup.py command for kaa-base, but that's a red herring anyway.)

That is really strange but just to be sure I checked on CentOS 5 (using EPEL's
python26) and CentOS (Python 2.6) and both show exactly the same problems.
I'll try to debug this on my system.

I do see one problem. (Well, at least one.) What is the name of the virtualenv you are using?

I found the problem and actually it was bad I stripped the path in my examples but I can see Marco has the same problem:
In setup.py, line 83 you remove items from sys.path if they contain '/kaa'. Now I always experimented in a directory named 'kaa' (Marco used 'kaa-base'). So clearly that check is faulty.

You make your version checks more readable (IMHO) by using 'sys.version_info < (2, 5)'
