from the data dictionary:

The residential eviction filings in that GEOID for that week of 2020-2022. The basic steps for calculating filings are as follows (specifics sometimes differ between sites):

  1. Receive updated raw data files each week/month, with information on case number, defendant name(s), defendant address/location, plaintiff information, date of filing, and other case information.
  2. Geocode the defendant address data (if available) to a latitude/longitude, as well as a Census Tract. Some sites only have zip code-level info available.
  3. Add in any row of data with new cases/defendants/defendant addresses to our existing dataset for the given site.
  4. Filter out duplicates. Filter out commercial cases by checking defendant names for any indication of a commercial entity (e.g. "LLC", "INC", "Construction").
  5. Aggregate case counts by week and by location, based on unique case numbers.
