Ansible is not clumsy. He actually moves with astonishing grace, but horrible events tend to befall him which perpetually keep him in harm's way.
His parents moved to the States from Bangladesh before he was born. His father, an avid sci fi fan, named him Ansible after the instantaneous communications device mentioned in several fictional works. This seemed reasonable to both parents (father is a nuclear engineer, and mother is an accomplished astrophysicist). Thus began his miserable existence; the children were never kind. Annie is not a great nickname for a young boy.
As an adult, he has an appropriately fine-tuned sense of the unfairness of the world. This is reinforced by the fact that, apparently, the Universe is actually out to get him. Not a day goes by in his reality where his safety is not completely compromised. Ansible keeps a box of Band-Aids, a roll of gauze, a tube of antibiotic ointment, and a needle and thread. He doesn't just keep this in a First Aid box in his home. He also has one in his car, in a pouch attached to his bicycle, in his filing cabinet at work, and in his backpack. Despite these precautions, he is frequently injured quite badly.
