The notification system for desktops (Windows, Linux, OS X) needs to be redone. At present, it pops up a modal dialogue that displays a message for a few hundred ms, then auto-closes.
The method was put in place for Symbian (Maemo uses a Maemo-specific system), and left for desktops because in the strictest sense it worked.
However, it's not visually pleasing, and there are better methods for doing this on a desktop system.
